Venue type: Bar
Review: Mark Davies
St Jerome's, in a long alley next to Myer, plays innocent cafe during the day. Bring on the evening though, and it ditches the foccacias and goes grunge.
Inside? Super tiny. Something you'd expect in the back streets of Paris, not Melbourne. Piles of clutter, second hand lamps, and beers served by the can.
Push through all that and end up in the courtyard. You'll find a DJ spinning away rockin' tunes, speakers on milk crates, alternative types everywhere, and a vibe that you haven't seen since the Big Day Out.
A second building extends the interior somewhat, over several floors including an upstairs dancefloor and rooftop area.
How it all came together is a mystery to us. St Jerome's is hands down one of the most leftfield venues ever. It's alternative, drum'n'bass, electro, indie. If you're the chilled type, you'll like St Jerome's as a perfect starting spot.
Always Busy
St Jerome's is tiny. If you're the only one there, it'll feel full.
Beer Garden
Party on in your own secret city alley complete with loads of drainpipes and walls stretching straight up.
Second Opinion
What this place lacks in choice of drinks it makes up for with atmosphere. Cafe by day, when the sun goes down electronica pulses through Jeromes and it becomes a cool chill-out venue.
The building itself, hard to find if you're not in the know, is only small but leads out into a graffitied laneway where a labrynth of rickety decking, old couches and wooden chairs await the thirsty customer. A DJ mixes his stuff under a tarp at one end of the outdoor area, making for a makeshift rave feel.
And the customers? With-it over 25s who prefer their house wine with a house feel.
Our tip: Take the stairway to nowhere if it's all getting too much.

Welcome to the new cool, no pretentiousness required. St. Jerome's has taken Melburnians' love of alleyways to the next level. You could just imagine Nico warming her vocals under the super heaters, Blaze brainstorming his next design and so on and so forth. This place is to fall for and to fall in ....... A place to impress and to be impressed by. It's like listening to Marvin Gaye's Troubleman album when all else fails to soothe your soul.

This place was a welcome change from the hoards of swanky bars dripping with pretentiousness that seem to be proliferating at such a fast pace. Makeshift is a word that came to mind as soon as I walked in but what a great set-up! The bar staff were helpful and friendly, the DJ created a great atmosphere with his funky selection of tunes and the decor was as unassuming as the people who lounged there (our table was a milk crate with a piece of wood on top of it!). Will definitely be going again!

We were told about this place by some locals and took a bit of searching to find... we walked up a grimy allyway past the entrance and decided not to enter beauce it looked really rough and sketchy. How ever we finally said stuff it we will give it ago.. walked in and was amazed it was a really fun loving place, every one gets into the music. There is something for everyone except real posh people. St Jerome's is honestly one of the best places i have been!

Relaxed and laid back is not how'd I'd describe this place on a Friday night! St Jerome's has a raw energy by night, it really gets you going. Everyone seems infected with good vibes even though it's as cramped as you can get. Kind of feels like you're at an awesome house party, or in another country, where not all bars and clubs feel the same.

Amazing! The music makes you just let loose whether it's you're type of thing or not, the people aren't sleazy or pretentious, there's no irritating strobe lights and the sense of joy you feel when you find a spot that isn't in a puddle for you to dance in is like nothing else! The lack of space doesn't even matter once you get into it.
It was a mainly male crowd though which was a little odd but you end up having so much fun that you don't even notice! I barely noticed the age of the crowd as well (and I was sober).
All in all a fantastic night out! except it closes at about 1..
