Venue type: Pub    Review: Mark Davies
Wonderful little pub that's full of clutter, and a shining example of how cosy some pubs can be. Imagine old wooden floorboards together with a curved handcrafted bar that's nice and low, giving a good overview of the whole area. Every inch of Gem Bar is maximised to the full, and the vibe is friendly local, with a mixed set of young and old. A pool table draws focus, and the odd acoustic act provides entertainment during the busier times. An area behind the bar is popular with diners, as well as a back room that sits larger groups in a family style dinner table setting. Tables on the footpath are handy should the weather be warm.

Easily one of our favourite pubs in Melbourne.
Always Busy
Given the Gem Bar's tiny proportions, only a handful of people are needed to give the pub an instant convivial feel.
Music Most Nights
An odd bit of impromptu acoustic most nights, be it a band, solo act, or just a bit of strumming of the guitar.
Readers' Reviews
This is one of Melbourne's best pubs - part of a declining number of pubs where you can happily go on your own and feel welcome.

Really cosy pub great beers including an excellent range of Coopers ales. I tried the Coopers dark which was well on form when I visited. Really freindly staff and a great atmosphere. A fair dinkum pub which is a must when visiting Melbourne.

Always friendly, never intimidating for a girl to go on her own, with a group even take the folks to the dining room. The owners seem sreally pasionate about music and so it seems to be such a high quality of good aussie country or blues that's put on live most nights. I can still take my corporte boss and be sitting next to an old tattoed rocker and yet it manages to make all feel welcome. It's an smaller size that ensures you'll meet someone during the evening!

I first went to the Gem with my wife who new that I was missing the bluegrass music from where I grew up (West Virginia, USA). She told me that she had heard that a band called Redfish Bluegrass was playing on a Friday night. We gathered a couple of friends to check out this pub and ended up having one of my best nights in Melbourne. The atmosphere was inviting, the crowd was warm, the beer was cold, and the band was spot-on.

I'm migrating to Australia permanently in about 1 months time, and the Gem Bar is high on my list of spots to become reaquainted. This pub feels like home.
