The Stamford Hotel, or the "Stammo" as dubbed by my Australian counterparts, offers a typical Australian night out within a reasonable sized complex boasting a few other bars and restaurants. In fact, I would suggest going to the complex for a pre-drink meal.
This is a one level establishment but is of a fair size. However, at weekends it makes no difference as this place can get packed within minutes! There is still enough room to manouvre to the bar and the toilets but expect the odd toe treading and an occasional 5 minute wait at the bar. It all adds to the fun so just go with it.
The age of the crowd is surprisingly diverse so it makes for an interesting but yet enjoyable evening so don't be put off. The majority of the crowd are local Australians kicking back after their week's work and they are very chilled out, friendly and command a comfortable atmosphere.
There is no dress code here but ID may be required at the door for those youthful looking pubbers. You will find that drinks are slightly cheaper than that of the CBD but this is to be expected due to the location. Which, in turn, I guess brings me to a bad point. If you live in the CBD it will be a cab ride home ($38per cab) as there is no transport back at 2-3am when this place closes. However, even though this may not become your local, it's worth checking out to see how the Aussies play at the weekend. You'll be hard pressed to find many backpackers here so I'd suggest to take a group of 4 or more with you, kick back and enjoy the rest of the company. Couples will enjoy it too, but do not even contemplate taking a date here.....
During the week I would avoid coming here as it's pretty quiet. At weekends they always have a band playing and I have to say I am yet to be disappointed by one. There are seating booth areas around the dance floor which, if you get there early enough, you can occupy and still converse with your mates whilst laughing at those on the dance floor. It's all funny until you've had a few and are up there with them!
All in all, a different, but worthwhile night out even if it's just to see the way they do it. After all, you are in Oz!
