Venue type: Pub    Review: Tony Clarke
Heritage pub popular with the West and North Melbourne tradies that like their pub as far away as possible from any of those fangly dangly upmarket pubs that seem to be popping up everywhere. The Railway Hotel's still a traditional bloke's pub, with much of the bar area well and truly untouched for decades.

The interior is one large room with a wrap around bar in a kind of oval shape - one side sits opposite the other. A separate dining room does the business during lunchtimes, when good old pub food is served.

A few little weekday items, such as toss the boss, are a contemporary touch. And let's not forget the odd band, which might play about once a month.

Location wise the Railway sits opposite the North Melbourne station, which gives good excuse to pop in should the next train be half an hour away.
Readers' Reviews
This really is a gem of a pub; again if your taste in pubs is traditional then this is the pub for you. The bar staff are friendly and are happy to have a yarn with you. The tucker's good too. Just across the road from North Melbourne train station and well worth a visit if you want to get away from the city centre for a while.

Opposite North Melbourne Railway Station, the Railway Hotel is the ideal place to unwind after work before you get the train out west.

Bands feature most Saturday Nights and there is also live entertainment on Wednesday evenings. Friday nights could be jumping to music videos or the staff could be singing Karaoke encouraging the guests to get involved.

This is a hotel that makes you feel welcome. Everybody has a smile on their face and laughs abound from opening to closing over a few beers or a glass of wine. The hotel boasts and extensive menu featuring everything from burgers and steak sandwiches through to specials like poached salmon. This hotel has a lovely bistro and has made the experience of dining at the bar special with the addition of little touches like a basket of sauces and condiments and place mats.

Everyone is equal at the Railway, and you'll soon see that it is the best of melting pots for professionals, wharfies, yuppies from the nearby converted warehouses and those passers-through killing time before their next train.

The Railway is great. As other reviewers have said, it's cheerful and unpretentious. And the glasses of chardy are GENEROUS unlike some other pubs out west! Just one thing - it often closes early (I've dropped by a few times at 8.45 on a weeknight and it's been shut).
