Review: Julie Whiting
Opposite a grandiose Fitzroy Town Hall, sits this ever-popular pub where a mish mash of old furniture keeps patrons comfy. The small front bar is a good one for striking a 'one arm on the bar, the other clutching a pot' pose, and the adjacent pool room caters for those wanting a more comfortable seating arrangement with tables. Actually, maybe not so comfortable depending on where you are in there - the cluttered layout makes real the possibility of being nudged in the back by a pool cue. Larger tables and more chairs adorn the dining areas, and there is also seating outdoors, along the side. Service can be slow during quiet times, but the Napier boasts great food, drink and atmosphere.
Outdoor Area / Beer Garden
The beer garden is quaint and narrow, in keeping with the Fitzroyness of the Napier itself.

You have to try the Napier Steak Sandwich - unbelievable - don't eat for a few days before this - comes with a field of Potatoes. Site of the Chapels Rovers Soccer Club Fat Ba$tard challenge (ie can you clear the plate?)

I lived next door to the Napier for the better part of a year and I'm ashamed to say I remember parts of it. Having travelled most of the Great Southern Land I can honestly say the Napes is head and shoulders above any other pub I saw in the country. A rare glimpse of what Fitzroy and other genuinely bohemian parts of the world were like before the forces of gentrification began to take over. Get it while you can. Just remember it takes two to finish most of the platters.
It's a sticky carpet place where suits and skater punks meet and respect each other, depending on how good their pool game is.
