Venue type: Pub    Review: Mark Davies
First and foremost, the Old Colonial Hotel is towards the end of the Brunswick Street strip, which means that the alternative people in here are there specifically, rather than having stumbled in on accident. Which is what for us makes things more interesting, you see.

The main focus is the medium side room when bands play, which is difficult to fully see from outside. Which again, means that the people inside, are there because they know it's cool to be there.

When no bands are on, the small and cosy front bar area attracts a more local and less alternative crowd.
Outdoor Area / Beer Garden
A large beer garden is just waiting for you out the back.
Live Music Venue
Gigs appear regularly (often more than one in an evening) on stage in the side room.
Readers' Reviews
Really cosy pub perfect for unwinding with a couple of pots of beer after a days hard yakka. The tucker's good too; my favourite is the steak and chips. But the menu is varied. I also like the pub as it reminds me of pubs I grew up in in Manchester years ago. For genuine pubs Melbourne really does have it all. And this district, Fitzroy, is a gem.

I luv this place, but don't be fooled by the facade. There's a beer garden out the back which is unreal - it's huge, cosy and often full of locals who will either keep to themselves or chat, whichever you prefer. The meals are cheap, the beer cold, the staff are very friendly and service is quick. Inside there's a bar, lounge, pool tables and lots of Fitzroy history, dispensed by the locals. You'll walk in knowing nothing of Fitzroy and walk out with a wealth of knowledge. They're very proud of the fact that the Fitzroy Football Club was formed here. Check it out - you'll be pleasantly surprised.
