Venue type: Pub, Bar    Review: Lush Green
If you're in the mood for a pub that's informal, with a mixed bag of clientele ranging from eclectic St Kilda locals to those wanting a cheap beer then this is your place. The tables are unpolished and the bar service is friendly and relaxed. There's a main bar with a pool table and your typical vinyl chairs and pub tables placed around the room. Wander past the pinball machines and you'll enter another room, with another bar which is mainly where the bands play. The Greyhound has been around for years and has supplied many ears with some excellent live music and entertainment in the form of drag shows, excellent local bands or karaoke. Check your local free press for whats on. Its so cruisy and crusty that a spilt beer easily goes unnoticed... which is a refreshing change in these days of polished wood and chrome.

The Greyhound has been my local for years, still think of it as such even though I've moved to the "other side". I love going back there, the staff are friendly and unpretentious and if you get to know the locals, sooner or later you can know the whole pub. I've had loads of interesting conversations there and seen some quality bands, also Kooky Karaoke on Sunday is good for the self esteem. I would be sad to see it change it's spots at all. It's the last pub of its kind in St Kilda.

The Greyhound Hotel is a St Kilda icon. While Acland Street, Fitzroy Street and the Esplanade have all become gentri fied, yuppified and Secret-Lifed, the corner of Carlisle Street and Brighton Road remains a bastion of the 'old' St Kilda. The pub certainly isn't trendy. The public bar is spacious& grungy The band room is large enough to cater for about 100 punters at a pinch and regularly attracts some good quality bands, if not household names.

What really makes the Greyhound special is the people. A more eclectic mix of St Kilda's denizens you couldn't hope to find. Bikies rub shoulders with trannies, young, trendy rock 'n' roll fans mix with veteran grey-haired drinkers. You even see the occasional suit. Everyone's welcome.

The drinks are cheap - by St Kilda standards - and the bar and its staff are inviting.
The Greyhound is known for its long relationship with pub rock, so it's not uncommon for veterans like the Cosmic Psychos to schedule a gig there at short notice. The band room environment is very different on Saturday nights, when it plays host a weekly drag show.

If your only experience of St Kilda is the funky bars of Acland St or the high-class restaurants on Fitzroy St, it's time you visited the Greyhound and got a true feel for the suburb's character.
