Venue type: Pub
Review: Simon Woodhouse
Is it a bistro? Is it a pub? With half the crowd hungrily wolfing down their stir-fry, and the other half somewhat obsessed with the video games side of things, we couldn't quite work out our purpose here, but had a few rounds anyway.
Initial impressions were definitely of a brightly lit bistro area, with only a handful of punters at the bar at any time. Unfortunately, the fast food outlets next door gave all the aura of an airport departure lounge. The crowd was well mixed, well in line with the rather generic feel.
Whilst not open super-late, we'd suggest this is as a convenient, and safe place to meet others (well, since it is placed right on the mall), or otherwise a convenient stop in between other pubs.
Readers' Reviews
We were looking for a cheap place for two to eat before we attended the rather expensive show "Wicked". Food was not restaurant style at $18 for two people (naturally) but it was wholesome, hygenic, good winter fare, 'backpacker' type food at the 'serve yourself', 'as much as you can eat' bistro. Staff were pleasant and efficient and kept up the supplies well in the bain-marie. Typical fare included fried chicken, fried rice, calamari, various casseroles, vegetables, pasta and salad. The place was well patronised on the night we attended. It was clean and tidy but it was a bit off-putting to have to go through the 'pool hall' (which was a bit blokey) to get to the dining area. The MB&B had a cosmopolitan feel with somewhat reflective lighting and we would certainly attend again whilst visiting Melbourne. Great place to eat if you are on a strict budget, have a short time frame to eat (there is no waiting) and don't expect 'The Hilton Hotel' quality. Well Done MB&B.
