Review: Julie Whiting
Formerly named the County Court Hotel and then the Ox (complete with a mounted ox's head over the entry to the public bar), the Oxford Scholar is one of only two* old-school pubs left in Swanston Street. (In 1870 there were 31.)
But that almost wasn't the case, as it was derelict for five years from the mid eighties and said to be haunted with a ghost which paced its cellars. Then in 1991 it was transformed into the comfy cafe style hotel it is today, winning the AHA award for best pub renovation in 1999.
With pool tables, a spacious interior, and welcoming glass doors that open onto the street, it is a definite lure for students and workers alike, who can often be seen sunning themselves in the seating out front (or in the beer garden) in clement weather. (Not recommended if your tutor/boss might stroll by)
* Have you guessed it? The other is Young and Jacksons
Outdoor Area / Beer Garden
With a retractable roof and heating for winter, and plain 'ole fresh air for summer, the Oxford's snazzy beer garden is a rare find in the city, especially as it seats 100 people. The extra bar, big screen TV and jukebox out here are an added bonus.
